The Art of the Mile: A Masterclass in Overthinking a Very Short Race

Welcome to The Art of the Mile—where design collides with niche obsessions, and the wit moves faster than any race split we’ve ever logged. This is a space for creative expression and humble perspective from a self-proclaimed amateur in both running and art. If there’s one thing faster than George Beamish’s kick, it’s how quickly we turn race results into full-blown personality traits.

This column is a celebration (and occasional roast) of everything that makes running miles so absurdly beautiful—and beautifully absurd. Journals from the front lines of training plans gone awry,  discussing racing strategies that make zero sense (but felt cool in the moment), ongoing civil war between carbon-plated super shoes and early-2000s NCAA legends. Spoiler: the shoes and the collegiate PRs are winning.

I’ll attempt to serve takes hotter than the 1982 Boston Marathon. Is the mile the perfect race, or should we all just admit it’s the 1500? Should pacers get medals? Are we actually faster—or just better at doping?

No topic is too niche, no opinion too unhinged, no Strava post too self-congratulatory for us to break down with love, sarcasm, and the occasional chart.

So lace up, lean in, and prepare to fall just short of your PR in every way imaginable—because in The Art of the Mile, we don’t just run races… we run our mouths./
